ADS
advertising. lets think about our love/hate relationship with this industry for a minute.
when you're watching a commercial it means you're not watching your favorite show, or the game is on hold. when reading a magazine and every third page is some air brushed model, you're not reading the article you wanted to read. in between every third song on the radio, some moron is screaming about used cars. while surfing the web, every two minutes a pop-up ad window takes over your screen, promising low insurance or a bigger penis.
yep, without a doubt advertising is annoying. as consumers we fight back with the mute button, switching channels, tivo, anything to get away from the bombardment. and yet when advertising is done well it can be every bit as creative, funny, engaging, thought provoking, as any entertainment medium.
below are some ads that didn't make me reach for the remote. in fact i looked froward to seeing them come on. hats off to the former adcritic.com that at one point hosted a lot of these ads.

you need quicktime to view these ads. they'll pop up in new window. or for even faster viewing right click on the movie and "save as the .mov" file to your hard drive then view off line at your leisure. the faster your modem the happier you'll be, but then those of you on cable modems already know that. enjoy.

hands down espn over the years has had the most consistently funny tv ads.
"espn - cherokee i have a watch!" |
|
another one from the boys in bristol aka espn. i think this ad entered the lexicon of all sports loving males. when your commercial is quoted like a fletch or caddyshack line you're doing something right.
"espn - yahtzee!"
|
|
i loved this whole series from bruce willis, bruce lee, george & wheezy, this was a great use of claymation & pop culture. this one with sly stallone as rocky was my personal favorite.
"lipton ice tea - that's brisk baby!" |
|
two words: beaver mascot.
"adidas - long live sport" |
 |
american pop culture at the turn of the century can be summed up in a single word: cynical. from larry sanders to seinfield in the 90's we liked our humor dry and sharp as a martini. check out this ad to sell car stereos.
"aiwa - another one bites the dust" |
 |
i only saw this ad online, but supposedly its from canadian tv. on so many levels i'm sure that the people for the ethical treatment of animals would take offense but man is it funny.
"john west red salmon - he endures the worst to bring you the best" |
 |
anyone who's sat in the bleachers at wrigley field knows this feeling when a home run ball heads your way. grab your umbrella and look out for some spilling beer.
"heineken - the mood swing" |
 |
so many people wanted to know the music playing on this ad that volkswagon actually released it as a cd single.
"vw jetta- sometimes everything comes together" |
 |
i am not alone in my love for this ad featuring the nick drake song, "pink moon". read this brief but cogent article by joey sweeney of the philadelphia weekly.
"vw cabrio- milky way" |
