rock on dixie chicks. the gals fire back with both barrels at their "un-american" critics. they also get some support from the boss.

an interesting article on the exorbiant pay of CEOs. in a year (2002) when the S&P 500 was down 22.1% the median compensation of CEOs ROSE 14% to $13.2 million.

i haven't checked out ol' cecil adams straight dope site in awhile. then i came across this article: Was George W. Bush AWOL during his time in the National Guard? some pretty interesting stuff.

monday, monday. very good weekend out here in wisconsin. we saw anger management on friday. pretty good, although all the nyc scenes made us a little homesick for brooklyn and the other boroughs. lots of cameos and a very good cast. i gotta say though, i think 90% of comedy is surprise and there were a lot of good laughs you've already seen in the trailers.

and speaking of trailers we were treated to a bunch. looks like a good summer for popcorn and dark rooms: x-men 2, charlie's angels (bernie mac!!), and of course the matrix reloaded. gotta run, its gorgeous weather out here in cheese land. gonna shoot some hoops and hit some tennis balls.

remember at the end of die hard, when john mclane's wife decks the really obnoxious tv reporter? everyone in the theater just started cheering. that's kinda of what it felt like watching kansas coach roy williams tell off bonnie berstein. talk about being pushy. the man just lost a national title, now you're asking him about any job offers he's had?! time and place, please. anyway it was a great and exciting final game to watch. on the financial side, my wife and i both won in our "jim harrick memorial group" ncca pool. she came in first place, i got runner up. not a lot of $$, but enough for us to have a nice dinner out somewhere.

my worst fears about homeland security come to life --- 'weekend warriors" with waaaay to much time on there hands keeping a small town in indiana safe. i'm waiting to read an article in a few months when one of them shoots himself in the foot, or tragically kills an innocent. read on.

in some happier news today the final four should be pretty good. everyone out here in wisconsin is pretty psyched about al mcguire's golden eagles return to the national stage. but what every fan of college hoops is really waiting for is the "one shining moment" video montage. this is a great article about the origin of the song, and the making of the video.

just a quick note on some more site updates -- this has been a pretty productive week. those with fast and/or cable modems do yourself a favor and check out the cold storage section. got a new link under the icon ouch turn up your sound.

schools again. in 1992 (two years after i graduated) maryland passed a graduation requirement, that all high school students had to complete some form of "non-profit direct service learning". politicians on the right and left went along with this nonsense, because with today's youth going to hell in a handbasket, nothing can solve problems like coercive volunteering. this is one of those well meaning ideas that's really just bad in practice. when you don't let someone graduate unless they volunteer, i got news for ya -- they're NOT volunteers. conscripts, now that's a much more accurate description. anyway reading this onion article made me think about this policy.

remember reading this?

in arizona two high school teachers have been suspended over war posters?! my question to the morons at the school district: honest people can disagree on whether or not the academy awards is a place to discuss politics and war -- but how is a high school history class NOT the forum to discuss "controversial issues".

just spent a fantastic weekend up in madison checking out the law school. very cool visit. also saw my old friend ted from dot.com days. i don't know how anyone gets out of madison in four years, we were at a bar (white horse tavern) that had $3 martinis and then a trek to la bamba for some "burritos as big as your head". definitely going back for another trip while we're living in wisconsin, especially when the weather gets nicer.

updated another section of the cold storage. this time its the ads section some pretty good stuff there, and those of you with fast modems & quicktime should enjoy yourselves. more updates to come. . .
