oh boy. now that the legislature in louisiana has ended crime, poverty, and all other pressing civic issues it feels compelled to tackle a real problem --- low riding jeans. louisiana bill 1626 would punish anyone caught wearing low-riding pants with a fine of as much as $500 or as many as six months in jail, or both. this is a state mind you where women show their breasts for beads!

read all about it here. no word yet on what the plumbers union thinks. but here are some other thoughts on this fashion trend.

columbine. has it really been five years? it seems like yesterday i can hear commentators asserting that this tragedy would mark the end of violent movies and video games that glorified violence. the reality five years later?

the number 1 and 2 movies in the country this week are respectively violent, graphic, revenge flicks - kill bill vol.2 and the punisher. the top selling video games for playstation 2 are navy seals, mafia, and grand theft auto: san andreas. what does it all mean? i don't know really. but maybe the movies and music that made such easy scapegoats following the shooting were really just that -- scapegoats.

today five years later the pop culture is the same, guns are still readily available, and a kid is getting bullied. . .

tounge vibrators, lawyers brawling at depositions. yes, folks cases like this are why you go to law school.

remember yesterday's word was "sanctimonious"? it fits today too. i'm no fan of the self proclaimed "king of all media". i never really liked his humor and frankly i don't care for talk radio much in general. i like to rock when i'm driving or getting ready in the a.m. all those personal feelings aside, what's happening to the man from the fcc is bullshit. complete and utter bullshit. feel free to quote me while we're still free to cuss in this country.

April 08, 2004

and the word of the day is sanctimonious - sanctimonious - adj. - feigning piety or righteousness, i.e. "holier than thou" attitude.

the word should come to mind as you consider the following stories:

a new dvd player skips objectionable content" so some guy in a dvd factory is going to decide what's objectionable? good luck watching a lot of dvds. how fast would that dvd player skip through the violence in the passion of christ i wonder? and speaking of the passion there's this:

"a church trying to teach about the crucifixion of jesus performed an easter show with actors whipping the easter bunny and breaking eggs, upsetting several parents and young children." click here for the story

and finally the attorney genral john ashcroft spends millions of dollars and dept. of justice time to root out terrorists? try porn. good ol' ashcroft. i think mark twain could have been speaking of him when he wrote "a solemn, unsmiling, sanctimonious old iceberg who looked like he was wanting for a vacancy in the trinity." story here.

the onion, in all its biting succinct glory has neatly summed up the arguments of the left and right on the iraq war.

some other thoughts; every time someone mentions the disparity in the tax burden in this country they are assailed as inciting, "class warfare". here's something to think about as you get ready for the april 15th tax filing deadline: "more than 60% of U.S. corporations didn't pay any federal taxes for 1996 through 2000." and the source of that info ain't michael moore or someone from the far left wing, its from an article in that voice of the liberal establishment -- the wall street journal.

class warfare rhetoric aside, don't you think the the middle class has a right to be angry about their share of taxes?

my wife = goddess. sure every man thinks (or should) that his wife is the greatest woman in the world. my question is "how many of them get their husbands tickets to see prince?" yep, thanks to my better half we're seeing the purple one this summer up in milwaukee. needless to say i'm pysched. just saw the video on vh1 this a.m. with his new song musicology. its is no hyperbole to call him the james brown of this generation -- just without all the drugs.

if you don't stay up late sometimes you miss good stuff. click on the picture above to see the video clip of this kid yawning at a bush speech. letterman dubbed it, "george bush invigorating america's youth". funny stuff. what's not so funny is the shoddy journalism of CNN in reporting about this tape. read the full story here and here.

mad props to the journalist and young hockey phenom, greg rolnick, for sending me this link. an absoulutely brilliant new advertising campaign featuring jerry sienfield and the man of steel aka -- superman. if you have a fast internet connection do yourself a favor and check it out.

sports illustrated writer, phil taylor, makes some good points in his article about duke. why do we hate a classy team, without a whiff a sex/grade scandals, or recruiting sheenanigans? coach k graduates his players and even the really talented ones usually end up staying four years. all they've done is excelled at basketball consistently.

good article. but i still don't like duke; they have my respect though. i think the dislike comes not for the school, coach, or players -- even though everyone has got to admit christian latener was a prick and bobby hurley was a whiner -- no my dislike of duke comes from the duke fans. starting with the announcers that run out of hyperboles in their description of the polish basketball genius from chicago, coach krzyzewski.

but then if you're not disgusted at the announcers cheering for duke just take a look at those bandwagon frat boy duke fans. they don't really like duke, they just like to be associated with a winner. you know the type. they root for duke in basketball, notre dame in college football, when the celtics were good in the 80's they were celtic fans. they love the yankees even though they've never been to new york city. you know the people i'm talking about? i know its a generalizaton but those are duke fans to me. anyway the article is worth a read.

also if you have the time, the ew pop culture quiz is a quick diversion.
