i'm back

apologies for the long delay. blogging is like working out; when you have a short hiatus before you know it becomes a longer hiatus. not that there hasn't been TONS of inspiration to spark the writing juices. it's just time flies.

one of the reasons was two weeks ago (sigh) sarah and i spent my spring break on the west coast. i'm working on getting some pictures up documenting our travels. the other reason is that ol' crazy thing called law school. only four weeks (YIKES!) and another year under the belt. as this is the 2nd year i'm going crazy looking/fielding job prospects and offers.

but fear not blog readers. i'm back in the saddle and i won't leave you again for awhile. next post will be about the issue that has the media and the blogosphere all astir -- the terry schiavo case.

i shook up the world!

"
so my alma mater beat michigan today in the big ten tournament setting up a second round meeting with (drum roll) number one ranked illinois. the 29-1 fighting illini are surely going to be living up to their moniker, since this is their first game since losing to ohio state -- derailing a chance to go undefeated in the regular season.

david and goliath, villanova v. georgetown, ali v. liston, nc state v. houston. you gotta love an underdog and i got nothing to lose, and no keith (an john marshall student/illinois alum) i'm not smoking funny stuff, you heard it here first: (drum roll again) northwestern will beat illinois tomorrow! there i said it. go cats!

the heat is on

new special edition of heat just came out last week. flatout one my favorite movies of the last ten years. do yourself a favor.

so long dan. courage.

so yesterday was dan rather's last broadcast. i know i've posted this before, but a final tribute the cbs newsman's anchor helm seems in order. have a listen.

oh geekdom!

just one more bell & whistle additon to the ol' blog. as you know a while back i added an rss feed link on the right rail. i've now added an online counter. see how many people are reading the blog at the same time. useless and pointless but when you're a tech geek pretty exciting stuff. more real posting later. . .

"we were somewhere around barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold..."

and with those words hunter s. thompson' began "fear and loathing in las vegas: a savage journey to the heart of the american dream" and ushered in the era of 'gonzo journalism.' a first person cinema verite form of writing where every thought, impulse, and action -- especially the mind altering ones were conveyed in a stream of consciousness style. not unlike. . .a blog.

last week the spiritual 'godfather' of all blogs took his own life. i can't express anything but disappointment that a man so very full of life took his own. now his family and others are spinning hunter's suicide as "going out on his own terms" similar rationales were offered by kurt cobain hagiographers quoting, "its better to burn out than to fade away." hunter didn't pull any punches in his writing and i can't pull any now: people that take their lives have my pity but not my praise. in the game of life you play the hand that's dealt -- and you don't fold before it's done. so long hunter, mahalo.

do yourself a favor and read fear and loathing and fear and loathing on the campaign trail '72, the former a literary classic, the latter maybe the best political book ever written.

i like many attempted a foray into writing 'gonzo'. what can i say? hunter made writing seem like the most exciting job in the world. but as any lush knows if boozing your way through bull fights and a typewriter was all it takes to write the great american novel anyone could do it. or this one for that matter. even though some of our great american writers have been drunks -- don't you kids try it at home. anyway here's my attempt from a few years back. looking at it now i feel oddly prescient -- it reads like a blog.
